Pennien Premier League
ROVERS moved a step closer to becoming champions of the Pennine League for the first time ever with their second vital victory in four days. The Weeland Road club bagged a crunch victory over long-time pacesetters and current champions Drighlington at the weekend.
And they crept closer to the league leaders with a resounding success over mid-table Keighley on Tuesday night.
Sharlston man-of-the-match and skipper Craig Miles powered over to open the try-scoring as early as the second minute before doubling his tally six minutes later to put the hosts in control. Chris Hill improved both efforts with the boot.
Keighley responded with a converted try by Bobby Brown on 22 minutes. But Miles completed his superb first-half with his hat-trick try, converted by Hill, to see Sharlston leading 18-6 at half-time.
Dale Potter continued Sharlston's dominance on the resumption with Rovers' fourth try. Keighley weren't throwing in the towel though, and Chris Atkins' try gave them a glimmer of hope of a comeback.
But Yorkshire Cup winners Rovers ran away with the clash in the final 15 minutes as tries from Sean Emblem, Gareth Davies and Miles sealed the win.
The victory puts Sharlston four points behind leaders Drighlington with three games in-hand.
