Rovers A crash out of cup competition
West Leeds .. 46
Sharlston Rovers A .. 16
Andy Bennet Memorial Trophy
An under strength Rovers side came off 2nd best in this game to crash out of the Andrew Bennett trophy at the 1st hurdle against a vastly experienced and strong West Leeds outfit.
Rovers started well and despite conceding and early converted try took the game to the home side with some good work from Hill and Whitehouse, well supported by Smith and Palmer.
A second converted score put pressure on the visitors then 2 quick fire scores meant the game was effectively over as a contest after 25 minutes leaving the Sharlston youngsters with only pride to play for now. Good work from Kavanagh and Shaw got the visitors back in contention and Smith crossed the line only to see the score wiped off for an alleged infringement.
Rovers battled on and were rewarded when Goodfellow showed his strength to crash over out wide after good work from Weight but the visitors restored their advantage just before the interval with another score.
The 2nd period saw Rovers showing they could compete with the forwards working overtime to give the backs some space to work in.
Rovers cut the deficit with a good score from Haigh who showed his blistering pace to cut through the defence after a good passage of play from the visitors, C. Hill converted to give Rovers a glimmer of hope, this was soon snuffed out however as the home side stepped up a notch and blitzed Rovers with 3 converted scores in a 10 minute period midway through the half. Rovers stemmed the tide and had the last word when Whitehouse crashed over after a well-rehearsed move for a deserved score again converted by C. Hill but at the end of this day Rovers were a well-beaten side.
Best for Rovers were C.Hill and Golec with Whitehouse taking the Majestic Décor sponsored man of the match award.
Rovers will be looking for an improvement in their next Game which is at Home v Cadishead Rhinos from the North West Counties league in the Barla national cup 1st Round, players meet at 12-30 at the clubhouse.
