Pennine Presidents Cup Round 2

Sharlston Rovers put their Yorkshire Cup woes behind them with a successful passage to the last 8 of the Presidents Cup on their quest to add silverware to the trophy cabinet. Rovers took control of the game early on a despite the heavy 41-8 defeat, newly appointed coach Keith Senior will be spurred on with the amount of effort from all the players. Early into the match prop forward Kevin Dickens powered through to record the first try of the game. 5 minutes later hooker Craig Miles added more air between the teams adding the one pointer with the anticipation of a close match but only minutes the game opened up into the favour of Rovers with Dickens crossing for his second try. Rover’s astute stand off Carl Saville crossed again for the hosts with Matty Bell adding the first goal of the match. St Joe’s spirited efforts were rewarded when Ben Lewis broke the line to supply pacey winger Richard Aka. With only minutes of the first half left, center Dale Potter furthered Rovers lead with a Matty Bell converted try to give Rovers a 21-4 lead going into the interval.

On the restart Sharlston lost both half backs when both players attempted to field a kick with a heavy collision that resulted in both players needing medical treatment. Craig Miles stepped in to boss the show for Rovers with 2 quick fire tries, one of which Miles converted. St Joseph’s efforts never gave up throughout the match and substitute Neil Barrett was rewarded when he powered through the defence. With 10 minutes of the game remaining Miles completed his hat trick proving unstoppable on a powerhouse run. Lee Kelly nipped over in the corner in the last 4 minutes of the game to seal Rovers passage to the next round.

With an impressive second half and registering 15 points Craig Miles sponsored by Total Quality Garage Doors too the man of the match accolade. This weekend Rovers make the journey to Bradford based Queensbury to try and catch up with Halifax Irish who stand 6 points clear with 4 games in hand, kick off 2pm
