Rovers 2nd Defeat in 3 days
Huddersfield St Joseph’s .. 33
Sharlston Rovers A .. 20
Pennine Division 1
After recent weeks heroics the young Rovers side were brought back down to earth with their 2nd defeat in 3 days. Following the mauling they received at the hands of promotion rivals Lindley Swifts in midweek the Rovers side were not at the races in this defeat to another Huddersfield based side, St Josephs.
Things started slowly for the visitors and after conceding a penalty close to their line the home side made them pay with a converted try on 4 minutes. Rovers hit back and levelled the score when Wandless burst through to score from close range, Kendall converting on 10 minutes. The home side increased the score with a 4 pointer on 20 minutes then again 0n 30 minutes to give them an 8 point lead. The recent hard league programme was finally taking its toll on the Rovers side as the youngsters struggled to find any rhythm to their play, despite the efforts of Hawksworth and Kendall.
The 2nd period saw much the same as the 1st with the home side increasing their lead on 46 minutes with another 4 pointer. Rovers finally got their way back into the game and Hawksworth reduced the arrears with a fine solo score on 50 minutes, Kendall again converting. When Ashley Kavanagh burst through to score on 56 minutes Rovers were somehow only 2 points adrift and looking to be in control. The comeback was short lived however as 2 quick fire tries either side of the hour mark both converted left the visitors with too much to do in the closing quarter.
Kavanaghs 2nd well taken try gave the Rovers a brief glimmer of a final comeback on 73 minutes but the home side cleverly saw the game out with a penalty goal on 76 minutes and a drop goal on the last play of the match to seal the victory for the Huddersfield side.
Rovers season is now grinding to its climax with 2 midweek cup finals against premier league opponents, Upton in the Wakefield and District Presidents trophy at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats ground Wednesday 27th April 7-30 pm kick off then Fryston Warriors in the Pennine Presidents trophy at Batley Bulldogs ground on Monday 2nd May 3-30pm Kick off. Followed by the final league game against Huddersfield St Joseph’s Sat 7th May 1-15 kick off.
