Rover’s unbeaten home record came to an end in this hastily rearranged league fixture against table toppers Boothtown Terriers. With the Halifax side pitch deemed unplayable the game was switched to Rovers at short notice, and while Rovers may have been missing a couple of key players they would take the field full of confidence after some recent good displays.

The visitors seemed to adapt the better of the 2 sides in the boggy conditions as they took an early 10 point lead with 2 tries and 1 conversion in the first 16 minutes.

Rovers hit back when centre Torvill crashed over for an excellent try on 20 minutes, Hoyle converting. Rovers continued their attacking play and were rewarded when Hawkins dummied his way over the line from 3 yards out to level the scores, Hoyle converting to give Rovers the lead on 25 minutes. Rovers were in the ascendency now and took full advantage when the impressive Kendall latched onto Jones neat pass to extend the lead on 30 minutes. Despite their control of the match at this stage the young Rovers side showed their nerves and were ofrtn guilty of not keeping possession which they would later regret.

Rovers finished the half in fine form and Huskins scored his 1st try for the club on 36 minutes to give the home side what seemed a comfortable 10 point lead at the break.

The wheels well and truly fell off the wagon in the opening 20 minutes of the 2nd period as sloppy play poor decision making and needless penalties meant Rovers hardly saw the ball and the strong running visitors needed no invitation to spoil the Rovers party. 4 tries in 20 minutes 2 of them converted turned a 10 point deficit into a 12 point advantage as the visiting forwards ran amok taking every chance they got.

Rovers were shell shocked by this and to their credit stemmed the flow and gradually made good progress with the ball but still the completion rate showed a touch of panic rugby at times.
Rovers went close through Huskins and Wilson before Kendall nabbed his 2nd of the day on 70 minutes to set up a pulsating last 10 minutes.

Despite having most of the possession and some good field position the home side were often frustrated by the tenacious visiting defence and again chance after chance went begging.

Boothtown had the last word when a dubious decision led to a penalty goal to extend the lead to 8 points on 77 minutes and the experienced visitors closed the game out to take away the points.

Best for the Rovers side were Smith, Huskins, Jones and Wood with Liam Kendall taking the Motor City Motorists centre sponsored sponsored man of the match award for an excellent effort on the day.

Rover’s next outing is a trip to Humberside to face North Hull Knights on Sat 12th December in the Yorkshire cup semi-final, 2-00pm kick off. Bus travel available contact the club for details.
