Yorkshire Cup Quarter Final

Rovers progressed through to the semi-final of the Yorkshire cup where they will play either Upton or Fryston at home, after a superb disciplined performance against old foes Queens.

As expected defences were on top in the early exchanges with no quarter asked or given by either side. Rovers started strongly and put pressure on the visitors with some good work from Whitehead and Miles giving an opportunity to Saville who was stopped just short after a good run.

Chances were limited with the focus on defence but Rovers took the lead on 20 minutes when centre Jones burst through and his clever well timed ball saw the supporting Whitehead cross from 20 yards out for the opening try, well converted by Glassell.
Rovers kept the pressure on and Olpherts made a good break to keep the visitors on their toes. Queens then had a good spell and it took some tough home defence to repel the strong running visitors with Bingham and Gamble leading the way for Rovers well supported by Miles and Saynor. The visitors were camped on Rovers line before a superb interception by Czopczic on 35 minutes saw him race fully 90 yards leaving the would be defenders trailing well behind to extend Rovers lead, Glassell again converting. Rovers were looking strong at this stage and the visitors did well to prevent any further scores before the interval.

As expected Queens came out strong in the 2nd period and Rovers were under pressure from the restart with good defence from Lingard and Beecher preventing a score, but the visitors were not to be denied moments later when they scored a converted try following a clever cross field kick to reduce the deficit on 45 minutes. The next 10 minutes were crucial for the Rovers as they withstood intense pressure from the visitors with an outstanding defensive display keeping the line intact.
Gradually Rovers weathered the storm and battled their way back into the Queens half. Good approach work by Wandless and Whitehead saw Lingard go close and Wood was unlucky not to score when supporting Savilleís good break.

Rovers were awarded a penalty but the attempt was inches wide before Glassell calmly slotted over a 1 pointer on the hour mark to give Rovers a crucial 7 point advantage. Queens regained possession from the restart and put pressure on the Rovers line forcing a drop out and making the Rovers defence work overtime to keep them out.

On 65 minutes queens took their chance and were rewarded with a try after a period of sustained pressure saw the home line breached with the visitors looking really strong at this point. Rovers again came back strong and put pressure on the visitorís line with Gamble and Jones going close before Carroll saw an opening in the defence and he darted through for a well-deserved score, Glassell knocking over the extras to give Rovers the 7 point advantage again going into the closing 10 minutes.
Queens threw everything at Rovers line but time after time the line held firm with some enthusiastic, tough and at times desperate defence.
The visitors reduced the deficit on 75 minutes when successfully slotting over a penalty and the stage was set for a grandstand final few minutes. Queens were camped on the Rovers line in the closing moments and the Rovers side had to work hard to clear their lines with Bingham and Saynor leading the way with their high work rate.

This was an excellent win for Rovers with some good individual performances coupled with a very good team display. Best for the Rovers side were Lingard, Jones and Miles with Bingham taking the Arkaans sponsored man of the match award for an excellent effort on the day.
