Cutsyke Raid the Rovers

Sharlston Rovers A .. 14 (10)
Cutsyke Raiders .. 24 (8)

Rovers came off second best in this tough encounter as they again lost concentration to gift the visitorís points at crucial times. Both sides were eager to continue with their recent good form and the visitors were first out of the blocks with a try on 4 minutes after the Rovers defence were caught napping out wide.

Rovers regrouped and gradually started to take control of the game with Hill and Richardson pulling the strings for the young side and some strong running from Dixon, Wood and Kendall. Excellent work from Kaye and Kelly gave Rovers good field position and livewire hooker Scott darted over for his 1st try for the club on 18 minutes. A mistake from the restart gifted Cutsyke possession and they took their chance well with another 4 point score on the last play of the resulting set.

Rovers again came back well with Hoyle starting to find the gaps and debutants Field and Bowery running well. Sharlston took the lead on 28 minutes when strong running from Wood saw him crash over near the posts with Richardson tagging on the extras. Kaye burst through the visitors defence and was stopped short after a good 30 yard run and Hoyle looked like scoring when his clever deep kick from the base of the scrum caught the visitors unaware and while he won then foot race for the ball his football skills let him down and the chance to score was gone.

Both defences worked hard and there were limited opportunities for either side to add to the score before the interval.
Rovers started the 2nd period with some strong determination and they regained their composure with some good work by the youngsters putting the more experienced visitors under some intense pressure at times.

With 55 minutes gone Rovers extended their lead when after some clever work from Beecher and Hick youngster Field crossed for his 1st try for the club on his debut.

Rovers were well in control of this game now and just needed to continue with the same game plan to give them the points. Good pressure by Rovers again saw them go close through Shaw but as mistakes crept in to the home sides play the experienced visitors saw a way back and were rewarded with a converted try on 63 minutes to level the scores.

A 2nd converted try on 68 minutes saw the home side behind and chasing the game going in to the closing stages of the match.

Forcing the play saw errors creep in to the Rovers game and all too often panic football led to lost possession. The visitors rounded off the dayís scoring on 78 minutes with a try that put them 10 points clear as Rovers again lost a game they should have done better in.

Cutsyke showed they could compete for the full 80 and were good value for this victory in a good clean but hard fought contest.

Rovers again showed they can match teams in this division for big parts of the match but will need to work for the full 80 minutes if they are to be successful at this level.

Best for the Rovers side were Field, Richardson and Wood with Hoyle taking the Arkaanís Indian Restaurant sponsored man of the match award.

Next week sees the 2nd team without a fixture, with the next game away at league leaders Stainland on Sat 8th November
