Pennine Premier League

Sharlston Rovers were pushed all the way in this Pennine Premier League opener where they welcomed newly reformed Fryston Warriors. With past encounters fierce a bumper crowd gathered to watch the 2011 BARLA National cup finalists clash horns once again and it was the new boys that started the better when Callum Bellas went in at the corner with Aaron Dobeck converting.

Carl Saville hit back for the hosts and captain Scott Glassell added the conversion to go level. The game stayed in the balance for a large period with both sides having failed opportunities. Rovers eventually broke the stalemate when new signing Dorrell Olpherts created an overlap and unleashed his winger Luke Beecher to but his side in front for the first time in the match. Jack Kirmond improved his sides lead with an unconverted score out wide.

Fryston hit back just before the interval and brought themselves to within 2 points with a Dobek converted Jonny Haywood try.Sharlston came out guns blazing in the second half and raced into a 14 point lead with a debut try for second rower Danny Field followed by Jack Kirmonds second try of the afternoon, Scott Glassell converting both attempts.

Fryston managed to regroup after the early onslaught and soon got back in the game firstly from Adam Rothwells try before Jonny Haywood completed his brace, Aaron Dobeck crucially converting both to bring Fryston within 2 points of the Rovers.

Sharlston used their experience of the big game pressures and returning Carl Saville completed a man of the match performance with the all important try to seal the game in the closing minutes, Glassell adding his 4th conversion of the afternoon.

Next week Rovers switch to Yorkshire cup action where they visit Hull Isberg in the first round for a 2pm kick off. A supporters bus is available leaving the Sharlston HQ at 11.30am, tickets are available from the clubhouse priced 8 first come first served.
