Pennine Premier – Saturday 20th April

After the slip up the week before at Thornhill the league was blown wide open making the Hunslet Old Boys trip even more of a must win fixture.

Sharlston’s defence throughout was the key to the victory with Rovers physically dominating their opposition with the nil at the side of Old Boys name being the most rewarding aspect of the victory. After last week’s poor defensive effort this Old Boys game will galvanise the Sharlston side as they prepare for the most import 3 weeks of the season.

Gareth Davies got the Sharlston on the board latching onto an interception pass and racing up the incline. Ian Jackson kept the board ticking over with the conversion and then later a penalty goal in a highly entertaining first half.

Rovers sealed the memorable win two further tries from Chris Aiton who had a great game from hooker and Tom Wandless had the last say backing up a Davies break from halfway. Hunslet Old Boys frustrated with not being able to penetrate Rovers line had 2 players dismissed one during the 2nd half for use of the elbow and 1 after the final whistle for referee abuse, both will be looking at a ban and with Sharlston still to welcome Old Boys in the last game of the season may benefit Rovers.

The win goes someway in repairing the damage done from last weeks shock defeat especially taking the points from Old Boys who are still in the running. Sharlston Queens and Hunslet Old Boys are all tied on 22 league points with Rovers still 2 games in hand on both, Drighlington and Slaithwaite sit just a point behind making this Wednesdays game at Drighlington even more important.

Next Saturday Sharlston host Queensbury in their 2nd to last home fixture of the season, kick off 2.30pm.
