Pennine Division 3

Rovers were full of confidence approaching this division 3 encounter against high flying league Rivals Selby Warriors after recent performances and despite lacking key players were determined to give a good account of themselves. Unfortunately they came off second best as Selby fielded a strong aggressive side and took control from the off with some hard running and no nonsense defence and dominated the game for long periods.

The opening quarter was fairly even with both sides looking for territory with 100% completion rates and the eventual score line would not have been predicted at this stage. Selby took the lead after 13 minutes from a mistake with the 1st of 3 quick fire tries within a 6 minute period that left Rovers trailing by 16 points after 20 minutes.

Rovers stemmed the tide for a period and battled their way back into the match with some good defence from Golec and Edwards and some nice touches from Gallagher and Smith on attack. A good break by Shaw saw Simpson go close before Whitehouse crashed over on 27 minutes after a strong run by Pajor, Hatfield successful with the conversion.

Selby restored the advantage 5 minutes later and stretched the lead to 20 points on 35 minutes with another converted score.

Rovers needed to start the 2nd period well if they were to have any way back into this game but it was the visitors who again took control with two quick fire scores to effectively wrap up the match less than 10 minutes into the half.

Rovers tried hard to get back into the match and Joe Whitehouse went close following good work by Gallagher and Edwards, with Hampshire and Shaw working hard to get Reville close to the line. Rovers held the line well until Selby sealed the points with a try on 75 minutes and Rovers will be left to reflect on where they went wrong in a game they started so well.

Best for the home side in an industrious effort were Hampshire Golec and S Whitehouse with Chris Shaw taking the Alarm and Security Services sponsored man of the match award for another nonstop effort.

Next game is at home to Leeds based Oulton raiders A Sat 26-03-11 2-30pm Kick off, where Rovers will be looking to bounce back with a victory. Players meet at 1-15pm at the clubhouse.
