BARLA National Cup 4th Round

Hull Dockers were added to the list of NCL premier scalps Rovers have built up over the years in this competition as they progressed through to the last 8 stage. It was fantastic performance and one that has been due for most of the season.

Rovers had almost a full strength team and hit the front when loose forward Miles powered over after good approach play from Davies but honours were even half way through the first stanza. Rovers were giving away un needed penalties and were made to defend their socks off and so they did for 10 minute purple patch for the hosts.

Davies almost regained the lead as he raced from half way beating several players on the way but was dragged down 2 meters short, but the last man held on for too long trying to hold on for his retreating team mates. The official awarded the penalty and Rovers gave the hosts respect by electing to take the 2. Tommy Malyan goaling.

This seemed to drag Rovers off the back foot as they enjoyed a 10 minute period with possession. It looked as though the hosts would hold them out but a minute before the half time whistle. Derrel Olpherts stepped the defence and after riding a head shot leaped over the line to the jubilation of the travelling species.

Rovers continued their command in the second half and went 12 points clear after a individual try from hooker Carl Saville who proved too much to handle from dummy half. Malyan goaling.

Dockers replied with their own try 5 minutes later with some strong running outwide.

On the hour mark and sensing a revival by the hosts Craige Miles bobbed over the one pointer to make the hosts need more than a converted score to catch up Rovers.

Rovers prop forward Tommy Crowther showed real strength to make his teams lead even more comfortable with a blistering break and bolt to the line, Andrew Zdobnikov converting to go 13 in front.

Rovers looked to have done enough to get into the last 8 draw but a late 2 try revival from the hosts put the wind up them but just about enough was done to hold onto the mammoth victory.

Birkwood Quad and Agricultural equipment sponsored Man of the match went to Carl Saville who was supported well by the whole team with special mentions to Andy Booth, Gareth Davies, and Derrel Olpherts.

The draw for the quarter final stage made live on BBC radio leeds came to no surprise to the Rovers contingent as they were drawn away to Drighlington to be played on Saturday 26th March. That now makes it a clean sweep of cup draws this season where Rovers have been drawn against the Leeds based league rivals. And Rovers will have a dry run of the big cup game this weekend as they travel to Drig for the Pennine Presidents cup KO 2pm.
