BARLA Ace Insurance (Europe) National Cup – Round 2
Sharlston Rovers progress into the BARLA National cup third round thanks to a 30-12 away victory over NCL division 2 team East Leeds. Despite always being in the lead the victory looked in doubt just after the second half where the hosts came back to within 2 points but Rovers held out and posted 3 tries to secure a huge third round tie this weekend versus Cumbrian giants Egremont Rangers.
Rovers started off well running down the steep slope and it wasn’t too long until they were in for their first try prop forward Danny Richardson going on an unstoppable barnstorming run, Tommy Malyan adding the easy conversion.
Sharlston added to their tally 10 minutes later when prolific center Gareth Davies hunted the try from an East Leeds handling error. Rovers looked fast around the ruck throughout with quick plays from their forwards and darting runs from Carl Saville. The visitors desperate to slow down Rovers play were penalised several times for persistent interference and high tackles and on the half hour mark the official had enough of the continual offences sin binning their prop forward Lee Fisher to try and stamp out the foul play.
The visitors made use of the numerical advantage 5 minutes from half time when the man overlap paid off as Rovers spread wide before Russian international stand off Sasha Lysokon dummied his way over.
East Leeds robust team looked as though the slope in the second half would benefit them more and Rovers fans were unsure if 14 points in first half would be enough to defend.
Sure enough the hosts used the incline to great effect with their hefty forwards gaining great field position and within 4 minutes of the restart East Leeds posted 2 converted tries to come back to within 2 points. Both efforts came from fumbled 5th and last kicks close to Rovers line.
Shell shocked by the lightning comeback Rovers got their act together and thanks to hard work from forwards Hall, Booth and Crowther attacked their hosts trying to put daylight back between the sides. With field position Rovers were able to spread the ball wide to center Lee Lingard who burst defence and raced to the line.
On the hour mark Rovers extended their lead further when Tommy Mullaney Snr sponsored man of the match Danny Richardson went on another defence shattering drive from 10 meters out, Sasha Lysokon adding the conversion attempt.
Rovers sealed their third round progression 5 minutes from the final whistle when Gareth Davies raced in to complete a brace for the centre, Lysokon again converting.
This coming weekend Rovers will host Egremont Rangers in the third round of the BARLA national cup. A big crowd is expected for the 2pm kick off.
