Maskill named as VC of Barla tour squad

The BARLA open age side are posed ready for the upcoming ‘chance in a lifetime’ tour to the South Pacific Islands which will include international test matches vs Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. The 28 man squad completed their last training session this Sunday before they fly out on Tuesday 9th June.

At the final preparation session coach and GB tourist John Fieldhouse put them through the last phase of his training plan before posing for the official team photo with sponsors UNISON and New Balance.

Fieldhouse also named his tour leaders with Wigan St Judes’ John Mc Mullen handed the captains role and Sharlston Rovers’ Lee Maskill supporting in a vice-captains role. The 2 leaders will be joined by 2 other senior players to head 4 teams of the squad that will compete in daily tasks whilst on tour.

Lee ecstatic is his appointment said
“When ever I play, be it for my club or country I always try to lead by example to motivate and encourage my fellow team mates and I’m delighted that John has noticed that aspect of my game. I was disappointed to miss out on the final stages of a successful season for Sharlston with a hand injury but I tried to stay positive and worked hard in the gym to stay fit. I’m really looking forward to the task that stands in front of me and I’m positive that we can return from this tour with 3 test wins under our belts.”

The final event to raise some funds for Lee’s tour fund will be at Sharlstons’ end of season awards presentation which takes place at Featherstone Rovers Clubhouse on Saturday 6th June starting at 8pm. Tickets are £10 each available from the Hotel and include travel from the Sharlston Hotel, entry, buffet and disco. As well as a raffle Lee has collected some unique shirts from his previous tours which will be auctioned on the night.
