ACE Insurance BARLA National Cup - Round Three

Sharlston continue their fine cup form returning from their round 3 National cup tie with the eventual victory. Rovers opened with a blistering first half but a lack of respect for the ball in the second stopped Sharlston from registering a big score.

Rovers took hold of the game from kick off with some early pressure and on 7 minutes Jonathan Waddle trampled though the defence to register the first score, Dale Ferris adding the goal.

20 minutes in and the St Helens hosts came within scoring position but Rovers looked dominant in the tackle and when awarded a penalty in front of the sticks they elected to take their points when they could.

Within minutes Rovers soon replied when a neat chip from Lee Maskill was superbly collected on the volley by Brad Chatfield before throwing out the back door to in support Maskill to touchdown under the sticks, Ferris adding the easy conversion.

The visitors pressed hard to amplify their buffer but Blackbrook showed a resolute defence with Blackbrooks man of the match Darren Forshaw switching centers to combat the strike force of the prolific scorer Gareth Davies.

With constant pressure Sharlston tried hard to increase the lead but were held out gallantly, moments before the interval Miles was tackled high and with not enough time to complete the set elected to take the two points to put 2 converted tries between the sides.

Despite the tight score line Rovers looked like they would eventually pull clear and when the Blackbrook defence tired Sharlston were breaking the line regularly through Miles and Davies. As the game went on breaks came more frequently which probably disrupted their game plan and were often guilty of forcing the last pass instead of building pressure.

The second half score eventually came on 10 minutes before time when Waddle crossed for his second, Bettison made the initial break but with no support kicked through for Waddle to hack forward and dive on in goal.

Rovers strong defensive display went to sleep at the last few minutes of the game and the hosts probably deserved a try for their constant efforts through out the game with winger Mark Leonard finishing off the overlap after the hosts kept the ball alive. Best for Rovers was fullback Geoff Hick, Craig Miles and Jonathan Waddle with Waddle standing out with 2 tries to take the Alarm & Security Services man of the match.

A mammoth month now faces the Rovers with the Challenge cup away fixture this weekend at Crosfields before travelling to Drighlington in the league, the national cup draw then Drighlington again, this time in the Pennine cup at home.

The romance of the Challenge cup is expected to rouse a strong support for the travelling Sharlston contingent and the club management have arranged 2 coaches for the special event.
