Yorkshire Cup Quarter Final
Rover’s excellent cup journey continues as they progress to the Semi Final of the Yorkshire Cup after this hard fought win against a very good Thornhill Trojans side.
With a place in the last four at stake both sides were definitely up for this with no quarter asked or given. In very poor conditions and a heavy wind at times Rovers started slowly while the Dewsbury based Thornhill side started well, putting Rovers under pressure from the off with some slick handling despite the weather.
Good defence from Timms and Whitehouse prevented a score with Smith and Golec also working hard on defence. Rovers were made to pay for complacency when a seemingly harmless kick held up in goal and the visiting winger Bendikas touched down for an unconverted score in the 10th minute. Rovers hit back and put the Trojans line under pressure but all too often they failed to complete when in good position.
Thornhill extended the lead on 15 minutes when their stand-off intercepted a stray pass and he raced to the halfway line before handing on to Bendikas for his 2nd try, converted by Hodgson. Rovers again took the game back to the visitors and were unlucky not to score through Richardson and Hawkins who was held up over the line. With the home side not taking the chances they created Trojans were building in confidence and had a couple of near misses themselves before Adam Jones showed his class near the line to score on 37 minutes to keep Rovers within sight of the visitors as the break approached.
Rovers started the 2nd half in good shape and went close through Martyn Nicol before Sam Wilson crashed over on 52 minutes to reduce the gap to 2 points.
Rovers defence was now firing on all cylinders as the visitors struggled to get into the Rovers half giving the home side good field position with the ball. Adam Jones 2nd try gave Rovers the lead on 60 minutes when he again dummied close to the line to score with Richardson tagging on the extras to give Rovers a 4 point cushion.
Hawkins thought he had scored on 65 minutes but his effort was ruled out by the official for an infringement, but Rovers were now in command of the match.
A long range kick and chase saw Chris Shaw using his pace to touch down in the corner to effectively seal the tie on 71 minutes. Rovers defence had been exceptional for most of the game and they ensured the visitors were kept out until the 78th minute when a very good kick to the corner saw Ratcliffe out jump the defence to score out wide but this was too little too late for the Trojans as Rovers closed out the match for a well-deserved victory.
Best for the Rovers side were Smith, Jones, Richardson and Golec with Liam Kendall taking the Motor City Motorists centre sponsored sponsored man of the match award for an excellent effort on the day.
Rovers reward for this victory is a trip to Humberside to face North Hull Knights on Sat 12th December, 2-00pm kick off. Bus travel available contact the club for details.
