In the 4th meeting of the two sides this season Rovers were desperate to rescue some pride with an embarrassing 42-6 home defeat in the Yorkshire cup semi final at the beginning and a closer encounter last weekend still fresh on the mind.

If recent results were to be used as an indication Rovers were to be severe underdogs for this tie especially with 5 players missing from the week before line up including playmaker Carl Saville, Lee Maskill, Andy Booth and the 2 russian tourists all unavailable.

In a performance inspired by player coach Lee Bettinson at hooker and with several players patched up Rovers pulled out the showing of the season to put the weeland road club into the semi final stages of the national cup for the first time in their history.

The Pennine league will have a definite representation in the final with Sharlston hosting premier division opposition and current holders Queens on Saturday 9th April in a game which is sure to attract a huge crowd.

Rovers opened up attacking down the hill and as past meetings have proved the visitors needed to register some points to defend when the hosts would use the slope in the second half.

Only 8 minutes in Rovers were able to open their account when Tom Burns hit a nicely timed pass to go through a gap close to the sticks. Tommy Malyan adding the goal.

Rovers piled on the pressure to add further scores with Steve Hall and Danny Richardson making in roads up the middle but the visitors couldn’t make the final pass stick.

Unlike previous weeks Rovers managed to control their hosts in attack, slowing them down at the play of the ball and wrapping up the penetrating offloads that have time and time again worn down the Rovers defence.

Strong defence from the whole team and specifically Adam Jones and Tom Burns topping the tackle counts gave the visitors more chances with the ball. 4 minutes before the interval after Davies was pulled down short of the line the ball crossed the width of the field with Jones finding Malyan on the wing with a pin point pass for the winger to cross in the corner.

With a 10 point buffer coming out of the interval Rovers would need to continue to tackle their hearts out to nullify the steep incline. Drighlington started to get their trade mark roll on opening the half but like Rovers in the first half couldn’t string together a scoring opportunity.

10 minutes into the half Tommy Malyan made best of time camped on the hosts line as he crossed for his second of the afternoon showing fleet of foot to go over in the corner.

Rovers went further infront at the hour mark to take a commanding lead when a move from the training ground saw prolific Davies loop round from the scrum to go over in the corner. Tommy Malyan adding a superb touchline conversion to give his side a 20 point buffer.

Malyan kept piling on the pressure adding another two points when Drig were guilty of holding on too long. With 10 minutes remaining a score from Luke Pennington for the hosts looked too little too late.

Rovers closed the magnificent performance firmly on top giving them some confidence for the remaining ties with Adam Saynor and Jonathan Waddle both crossing for Malyan converted scores and Craige Miles added a late drop goal to keep the score board ticking over.

This weekend after several weeks on cup duty, attentions turn back to league action as they open up the first of 2 games at the Weeland road base. The first team hosting Huddersfield St Joesphs at 2pm followed by The A’ team playing Greetland All Rounders kick off 3.30pm.
